When did life get so complicated? It seems as if we are all running around in a race against time. We become emotionally invested in getting things done better, faster, cheaper. At least I know I did. My first “in-your-face” example of how quickly I was moving was when Joel & I lived in Wayne, PA. I worked at 1500 Market Street in Philadelphia, commuting by train to the city each day (anyone remember SEPTA?). Like any other ambitious person in her twenties, I wanted to get ahead — so I worked long hours to produce work I could be proud of. And unfortunately, like many of us, I tied my self-worth to how quickly and how well I could produce. Does this sound like you or anyone you know?

It’s Good to Know: Reindeer
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, the males drop their antlers at the beginning of winter – usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.

Therefore, according to every traditional depiction of Santa’s reindeer, every one of them – from Rudolph to Blitzen – is a female.

We live right up the street from a quaint little Saban church. It sits outside our bedroom window — making a beautiful contrast with the green mountain, palm trees and ocean below. I’ve always loved this church and hearing the bells on Sundays. However, this week we were jarred awake by clanging bells at 4:30 am — yes, that’s AM!

Studies show that turning off the TV at least an hour before going to bed can lead to a better night’s sleep. As much as we love TV, it is stimulating and wakes the body and mind up at a time when you want to start winding down.

Try this experiment for just one night and see what happens. If you like it, you may want to make it part of your routine – or just use it as a technique for nights before that big meeting or business trip.

Ok, some of you aren’t supposed to bet (company policy), but those who can may want to get in on this one. Will we or will we not get cable TV? Right now, we do not have TV. We missed the last episode of The Apprentice, movies on HBO and our favorite HBO original programming.

Rainbows Every DayOkay, call me sheltered, but I grew up with parents who liked to antique for fun & vacations. Needless to say, I didn’t get to the beach much. So I’d never seen the phenomenon where a cloud settles in one spot on the ocean and just pours down rain. You can see the rain, but it’s perfectly clear where you are. I am still so impressed by that!

The best thing of all is that there is always a rainbow somewhere in the distance. Rainbows, double rainbows – we see them all the time now. I am still in awe of them and take pictures every time, while the locals just smile. They love their island and they love it even more when us new folk love their island with them. If you want to know what’s at the end of the rainbow, we can tell you! We think it’s better than a pot of gold.

Santa Leading Parade to The BottomToday was a big Christmas celebration on Saba! Santa flew in on Winair (the tiny planes that land in the Saba airport) to see the island children. Everyone met Santa at the airport – he came out in full regalia (yes, even in 80 degrees, Santa wears his full red & white winter suit), ringing his bell and ho-ho-ho-ing.

How often do you listen to your own voice? If you clench your jaw or tighten your throat – or if you have soreness and tension in these areas, you may be suppressing your true voice. Headaches and migraines may also be an indicator of people pleasing – or not going with your own desires/meeting your own needs.

How often do you do what YOU want to do, regardless of what others will think? Try this experiment – I’d love to hear from you about what you found!

After a long hiatus, I’ve started up my yoga practice again. While I can go do yoga overlooking the ocean, I have started my practice in my cottage. I do a vigorous form of yoga called Ashtanga. Ashtanga yoga is really great for type-A personalities because it’s active and challenging. It’s actually the yoga that Madonna made famous, although I didn’t know this when I started.
